Writing an essay plan

Scaffolding is the process of breaking learning outcomes (or learning new skills) into manageable units, with the lecturer providing decreasing levels of support as students grasp new concepts and master new skills. One of the main benefits of scaffolded instruction is that it provides a supportive learning environment. Therefore, Assignment 2 followed a scaffolded learning approach, as you will require the concepts and skills developed in Assignment 1 to complete Assignment 2: The essay plan.

Topic: Discuss the impact of library access in schools on the development of academic literacy skills

1. Before completing this task, read Unit 3: Planning and Writing Academic Essays in your R-ALI 110 Curriculum and Learning Guide (CLG). Then, access and study the support material (uploaded to Additional Resources on MySANTS LMS or click on the links below) and complete the following tasks.

Topic: Discuss the impact of library access in schools on the development of academic literacy skills

Outline the main paragraphs of your essay

• Write a plan for the body of your essay in response to the topic.
• For example, what are the main reasons that substantiate your position statement?
• You should plan for three (3) paragraphs with a reason for each and evidence for each reason.
• Consider three (3) distinct reasons and find reliable evidence to support each. The information from this section will inform the paragraphs of the essay you compose for your following assessment.
• Remember to write in full sentences and use in-text referencing to provide sources for your evidence.

Write a paragraph plan for your FIRST BODY PARAGRAPH.

• Remember, your reason should respond to the topic, and your evidence should offer support for that reason.
• When you write the first draft of your essay, the reason should form the basis of your topic sentence, and your evidence should form the basis of your supporting information\

Write a paragraph plan for your SECOND BODY PARAGRAPH.

• Remember, your reason and evidence for your second paragraph must be distinct from the reason and evidence from your first paragraph.
• Remember to write in full sentences and use in-text referencing to provide sources for your evidence.

Write a paragraph plan for your third and FINAL BODY PARAGRAPH.

• Remember, your reason and evidence for your third paragraph must be distinct from the reasons and evidence from your first and second paragraphs.

Write a BACKGROUND STATEMENT as part of your introduction

• Remember, you need to provide the information your reader should know to understand your essay’s topic.
• Thus, you should provide context.

Write a POSITION/THESIS STATEMENT as part of your introduction.

• Remember, your statement should include your stance/opinion.
• Thus, to what extent do you agree?
• Therefore, your position statement is very important.

3. Before completing this task, read Unit 3: Planning and Writing Academic Essays in your R-ALI 110 CLG and complete the following tasks.

Write a plan for the CONCLUSION of an essay in response to the topic.

• A conclusion has the following components: transition phrase, restate your position, and backing statement.
• Remember, in-text citations are not required in the conclusion.

RESTATE YOUR POSITION using a TRANSITION PHRASE as part of your conclusion.

• Remember, you need to use a transition phrase to indicate to the reader that you are concluding your essay, and your conclusion needs to link back to the introduction.
• Thus, you should remind the reader what your position/stance is to demonstrate that you have proved it.

Write a BACKING STATEMENT as part of your conclusion.

• Remember, your backing statement should show that you have made a valid argument in response to the topic.
• You can also reiterate any major point of scholarly information mentioned earlier in the essay or provide a summary of your findings.
