Highlights
Learning Outcomes to be assessed
1) to carry out an experimental investigation into failures due to fatigue or fracture using appropriate techniques and with reference to various standards
2) critically analyse and solve a range of complex problems involving fatigue and fracture
Question 2
a) A machined component is subjected to various cyclic axial loads as given in Table Q2. It is subject to a stress concentration factor of 2.2 due to a fillet radius of 2mm.
Given that the tensile strength of the component is 620MPa, determine the maximum number of cycles, using both Miner’s and Manson’s approaches, that the component can withstand if a load of 190MN/m2is then applied.
State any assumptions made.
b) Discuss the limitations of Miner’s rule for cumulative fatigue failure and explain why it is the most widely used technique for such calculations.
