This assessment is to assess the students’ capacity to determine the significance of a diagnostic test to diagnostic decision-making.

Content

The student is required to select a patient / client from their category of practice and identify a test performed/tool applied as part of the assessment of this patient/client. They are expected to describe the test/tool, appraise the evidence supporting its role in diagnostic decision-making and reflect on the implications of this evidence on interpretation of this patient/client’s results.

For example

  • Patient presenting to ED with symptoms of PE – the capacity of the ECG to contribute to diagnosing a PE
  • Client presenting to drug and alcohol clinician – the capacity of a self-administered screening tool to diagnose ‘at risk drinking’.

The assignment should address the following areas: Patient presentation Presents the patient/client history and examination with enough information to understand the decision to use the test/tool The material is documented succinctly and logically

Description of the test/tool

  • Briefly describes the test/tool, & the scoring systems/ interpretation of results if applicable
  • Identifies the preparation required to perform the test/tool and the techniques used to apply/perform the test/tool

Evidence appraisal

  • Demonstrates an understanding of reliability and validity and diagnostic accuracy
  • Identifies appropriate evidence supporting tool reliability and validity and/or diagnostic accuracy
  • Adequately describes the studies and assesses the study quality
  • Assesses the contribution of the studies to the evidence for the reliability and validity and/or diagnostic accuracy of the test/tool

Evidence implications

  • Identifies the significance of these results for clinical decision making
  • The rationale for using the test/tool in this case is made clear, which includes an assessment of the risks and benefits
  • Addresses the implications of this evidence for interpreting this patient/client’s results
