Monash LGA profile shows 10.8% of the population is a current smoker (VicHealth, 2016). The estimated population of Monash is about 190,234, which means about 20,500 smokers (City of Monash, 2017). This is a high number if we consider the area. As per Australian Bureau of statistics (2019) the trend of smoking starts from the age 18-24 and increase up to the age of 45 years. It starts declining significantly after 55 years of age. Men are slightly up about 4% higher in ratio than woman who smokes daily in Monash. So we have stressed on age 20 – 40, the peak age group at people generally smoke (Greenhalgh et al., 2020).

What social, environmental and behavioural determinants of health are contributing to this health issue? How?

Young adults start smoking influenced by watching parents smoking, siblings or friends influencing them to try. The belief that just trying will not harm and they will not get addicted.  The curiosity on restrictions, the risk-taking behaviour, self-esteem.Also, exposure to tobacco advertisements, smoking images or scenes in popular TV shows or films and affordable price all contribute to smoking (Greenhalgh et al., 2020). The stress in women being sole parent or managing family and work together, family violence and even smoking control weight makes them prone to smoking (Women’s Health East, 2018).

Are there any existing programs/policies etc., already addressing this issue in this community? If so, what are they and are they being effective?

Monash University has initiated full ban on smoking on all their campuses. Monash University also provides quit support through University Health Services, counselling, and free workplace QUIT programs to actively support employees who wish to quit. (Monash University, 2020).

Monash council initiated their own laws which ban smoking at local events, inside and within 10 meters of the Council building, grounds and buildings used for cultural, sports or leisure purposes, children’s playground, skate park, swimming pool complex. Council has organized educational visits to retailers that sell tobacco and educated them of their duties to comply with the Tobacco Laws (City of Monash, 2019).

However, they are good initiatives but we believe more can be done by reaching people on individual basis to inform them about the support, programs and benefits available to them.

Monash is a hub of education. It comprises of the major Monash university and Monash hospital. Thousands of students and individuals approach them every day. We can reach our target population by collaborating with these institutes. We can also include about 20,000 businesses operating in Monash to support their employees by putting smoking policies in place and distributing our flyers to their staff. We can also ask all these entities above to sponsor us as it will promote their organisation by helping the community for this major issue (Australian Bureau of statistics, 2020)
