Assignment Task

Apart from the health issues that someone might suffer, those who receive a diagnosis of cancer may also have associated social stigmas. This can affect attitudes, and the way that these individuals are treated by others. One particular stigma is the connection between smoking, and lung cancer. This experiment explores whether anchoring (the reliance on early information in impression formation) influences the development of stigma.

The present study
Participants were asked to read a vignette describing a patient who had been diagnosed with lung cancer. The vignette also described the patient as either being a smoker or a non-smoker. The manipulation here was the order in which this information was given. Some people were given the diagnosis first, and others were given the smoking condition first. There were four conditions, labelled based on when the information was given:
Smoking First – Smoking Second – Non-smoking First – Non-smoking Second.
The vignette (with alternate text versions) is the file ‘2000PSY_TextVignette.docx’.
After participants read the vignette – they were asked to rate the patient on a series of questions designed to understand stigma in terms of the perceived characteristics of the patient described in the vignette.

You should use the following research questions, as well as the literature that you read, to form your hypotheses. There should be a hypothesis for each research question. You should not simply copy these research questions (as they are not hypotheses in the current format!).
RQ1: Does it matter whether the patient smoked?
RQ2: If a patient smoked, did it matter which order the information was presented?
RQ3: If a patient did not smoke, did it matter which order the information was presented?

ANALYSES
With your four experimental conditions, you should look to run an appropriate analysis to examine whether there was an effect of the vignette group on the stigma questions. Note that there are multiple ‘correct’ ways to analyse this data, but we are examining your ability to conduct One-Way Analysis of Variance, with multiple comparisons.
