Aim

The aim of this assignment is to give you an opportunity to reflect critically on a cultural experience in your own country, and to link your experiential knowledge to concepts and theories related to culture and cultural diversity from this unit.

Description

This is an essay on the affective and behavioural aspects of cultural diversity from an experiential perspective.

• Think of ONE incident/issue related to cultural diversity which you have personally experienced in your own country (you were involved or were an independent observer, e.g. an experience relating to stereotyping, ingroup/outgroup behaviour, culture shock, differences in expected behaviour, culturally-based misunderstanding, prejudice, intercultural learning experience, enrichment in personal worldview) and which took place in an educational or workplace context. This experience could be a positive one (e.g. a rewarding intercultural learning experience), an awkward one (a culturally-based misunderstanding), or a negative one (experience of prejudice).
• Start your essay by discussing why you chose this particular incident/ issue and its significance to the topic of cultural diversity in learning or working. Describe briefly (no more than 100 words) the incident/issue itself, and its behavioural and affective aspects. Then discuss the psychological principles - in the interaction with sociocultural contextual dimensions - which can be proposed as an explanation, e.g. how it relates to the worldviews, cultural beliefs, values, socialisation process and expectations of those involved.
• The main criterion for this essay is depth of reflection on the cultural experience and this should be the focus of your 5 minutes video presentation.
