(as cited in Chirema, 2007) promote reflection as “an important human activity in which people recapture their experiences, think about it, mull it over and evaluate it” (p.193). Reflection provides the nurse with the opportunity to analyse the circumstances surrounding an event, explore the actions of the people involved, consider how this interconnects with the event as well as eventual outcome, and develop a plan for future practice. One of the most important aspects of reflection is analysis as it allows for the development of a “new perspective” in which new insights and understandings are achieved, it is this new perspective that is known to promote new learning. Note that a reflection is not only a description of an experience or an event. You need to go beyond that and consider your reactions to the experience, what the positives and negatives of it were, what you have learned and what you might do differently next time it occurs.
In this assessment you are required to identify a recent significant clinical experience that you were involved in and using Gibbs Model of Reflection (1988), reflect on the experience. You are encouraged to identify an experience that was emotionally charged and/or significant for you. Questions you might consider when reflecting include:

Description
o What did I do during this event or experience, what did others do and what happened next?

Feelings
o How did I feel during the experience, and how might have others felt?

Evaluation
o What was I trying to achieve in this scenario, what was good about the experience, what was bad about the experience?

Analysis
o What is a possible explanation for the event, and how might this have looked to others, what might their perspective been?
o On reading the literature surrounding the topic, what other explanation/s are there for what occurred?

Conclusion
o After reviewing all the possibilities, what are the issues that contributed to the situation and what actions could I or others have taken to change the situation. What have I learnt from the situation?

Action Plan
o What will I do differently next time if this were to occur again, how will I prepare myself and what actions will I implement here?
o What outcomes/changes will I demonstrate that indicate that I have achieved my action plan?
