OVERVIEW

This consolidation professional practice unit comprises 160 hours nursing practice in an acute hospital setting. As consolidation, it provides the opportunity for transition to practice in preparation for Graduate employment as a Registered Nurse (Division 1).

A written reflective piece is required in addition to the final formative and summative ANSAT assessments.

Purpose of the assessment

To reflect on the journey of becoming a Graduate Registered Nurse.

Learning outcomes that align to this task

This capstone task links with the concept of life-long learning and continuous professional development in the Course Learning Outcome and the Registered Nurses Standards for Practice:

  • HBMA Course Learning Outcome 8 – Reflect on their identity as a developing health professional and articulate their plan for lifelong learning
  • Registered Nurses Standard for Practice (NMBA, 2016):

o Standard 3: Maintains the capability for practice; 3.2 uses a lifelong learning approach for continuing professional development of self and others.

DETAILS

Identify a specific issue from placement during the course that has influenced your growth as nurse-midwife across the journey from student to graduate. This may be an event or episode of care from any nursing professional practice placement undertaken during the 4 years of the program.

Reflect on the event/episode of care to think on what happened, how you felt and the outcomes of the event/episode of care

The process of reflection requires critically evaluating a particular ‘care situation’ on placement in which you have been involved.

  • Sit quietly and think about a care/practice scenario. This can be at any time during a patient’s episode of care and could range from the first time met and assessed the patient through to more care provided up to when the patient went home or received health service support in their local community.
  • Briefly write down your thoughts, perceptions, impressions and feelings related to this practice experience.
  • Explore being with the patient from a professional perspective with reference to how you provided the care, how this care impacted on being with the patient, and any interlinking relationships with your nurse colleagues or medical practitioners who were also involved as part of this practice scenario.
  • By reflecting on your thoughts and feelings of this practice experience you are provided with the opportunity to think about and formulate strategies to use in your practice when you are in a similar care situation with a woman or patient the next time.
  • Keep the information you compile from your reflection with your ANSATS. It may be shared with your course mentor only, so feel free to write your true perspectives on the practice situation.

INSTRUCTIONS

Write the reflection using the following four (4) headings:

Step 1: Description of what happened

Write details of what actually happened for in the event/episode of patient care. This writing relates to what you observed.

Step 2: Reflection on what happened and how this made me feel

Sitting down and thinking about the event/episode and how you felt, what you noticed, and areas you identified where further knowledge or information is required

Step 3: Research undertaken to inform my knowledge of the situation

Writing about information you sourced that helped provide greater understanding of the patient care. This could include the use of evidence resources and/or debriefing with a clinical facilitator or trusted professional mentor.

Step 4: Reflecting on feelings, outcomes and self-learning for the future

Detailing what you feel now and how the reflection may contribute to your nursing practice in similar patient care situations, and/or as a general registered nurse.

As this is a professional reflective piece, writing in first person (use of ‘I’) is completely acceptable.
