ASSESSMENT TASK 2: DESCRIPTION 

Clinical assessment is twofold, the patient interview and the physical examination. The patient interview is the primary means of extracting the patient's perspective of their presenting problem and key to developing a person-centred plan of care. Establishing a therapeutic relationship and extracting a robust patient story utilises a plethora of communication skills such as empathy, active listening, nonverbal communication, building rapport, along with open and closed questioning.

In this assessment you will complete the following tasks: 

1. Conduct a patient interview and write a summary of your findings . 

2. Using a reflective model of your choice*, self-evaluate your interviewing style for its effectiveness in  obtaining the patient's story and presenting problem. 

3. Select one communication strategy you used during the interview and justify why it contributed towards  establishing a therapeutic patient interview. 

*Suggested reflective models might include Kolbs (1984), Gibbs (1988), and Johns (1995). Under your subject readings titled assessment 2, additional readings have been added to assist you with selection of your preferred reflective model.
