A regional electric generating facility is located on the coast of Scotland and this facility uses seawater to cool water during the process of producing electricity. One outcome of this activity is the discharge of seawater with elevated temperature into Walter Bay (site1). Within 10 km of Walter Bay is Scott Bay (site2), which has similar characteristics to Walter Bay except for the discharge of seawater at elevated temperature. Anglers have reported that perch caught in Walter Bay are larger than perch collected from Scott Bay. To investigate this report, perch (age 1 year) were randomly sampled from Walter Bay (WalterFish) and Scott Bay (ScottFish), the total length (mm) of each perch was recorded on the boat and the fish were released. A physiology test was also conducted to determine the effect of temperature on fish respiration. For the physiology test, ten perch (age 1) were randomly sampled from Scott Bay and brought to the laboratory. After acclimation at the temperature of Scott Bay, each fish was individually placed in a chamber containing water at the temperature of Scott Bay, and the respiration rate (number of operculum movements per minute) was recorded (ScotResp). Then the water in each chamber was gradually replaced with water that was at the temperature of Walter Bay and respiration of each fish was measured again (WalterResp).
