Case Study
Regional Gardens Ltd is a company that runs a number of related enterprises. It has a large display garden that it opens for public inspection a number of times a year. The company also owns the Regional Gardens Nursery which sells plants and garden supplies to the public as well as providing garden advice, design and consultancy services. The directors of Regional Gardens Ltd want to expand the design and consultancy aspects of their nursery business to offer a garden design application. You have been engaged to design the interface for this application.
They envisage that the application will allow users to enter the details of a block of land, its features and vegetation to create a garden plan. The users should then be able to add any features that they wish, such as paths, water features, rock gardens, etc, to the garden plan. They should also be able to plan for structures, such as patios, terraces, fences, walls, etc. Both features and structures should be able to have their final size and shape adjusted when added to the garden plan. The application should also provide a list of plants and shrubs that are usually available from the Regional Gardens Nursery. Plants that are selected from this list should be able to be placed on the garden plan and show their approximate full grown size and shape (height and width). Plants that are selected and used in the garden plan should be kept in a list for the user.
The application should allow the user to print the entire garden plan or any part that is required. The plants list should also be available to print along with the garden plan.
The following is out of scope for this project:
The underlying operating system for the application;
Network or web access considerations;
Electrical or technical specifications.
Question 1
You are required to design an interface to meet the requirements laid down in the case study. You are to:
1. Define what you see as:
The user requirements for this proposed system
The constraints on this proposed system
Justify your design decisions with reference to design principles
2. Design an interface for this proposed system. Your design should consist of a wireframe of your proposed interface. It should clearly show all the major features of your design and each feature should be clearly labelled and identified. The design must:
Meet all the requirements laid out in the case study;
Include all pages required for the final implementation of the design
Include all screen components for each page;
Include all navigation components;
3. Create a click-through prototype of your design using Balsamiq Mockups Links in presentation mode. When the links in your presentation mode mockup are working correctly, then export your presentation to PDF
Question 2
You are also required to test your proposed design to check for usability. You are to:
Design usability testing for this proposed system. Your usability test design should include:
The goal of your usability tests;
What tests you will conduct;
How you will conduct those tests;
How you will record and analyse the data from the tests.
