The Preschool Director also asks you to do a presentation to 5 preschool staff members (two School Support Officers, two teachers and the director) on fine motor development delay, your Occupational Therapy role and clinical reasoning relating to assessment and intervention. She says that the staff have had limited exposure to working with an Occupational Therapist and the experience base is mixed in regards to fine motor delays. You prepare your presentation, and include the following sections:

• Description of the condition; including how it affects the person’s occupational performance

• what assessments you have undertaken/ will undertake and a rationale for these;

Your supervisor shows you a new referral from the local GP for Dolores Sanchez, a 70 year old lady with moderate Alzheimer’s dementia. Until a month ago, Dolores lived on her own, but she now lives with her son (Juan) and his wife as they felt that Dolores was no longer able to live alone. Dolores speaks Spanish and Juan and his wife speak simple English. The referral states that Dolores easily forgets recent events/conversations and angrily refuses to shower when urged by Juan. Her son dismisses this behavior as ‘stubbornness’. The GP asks that the Occupational Therapist looks further into Dolores’ refusal to shower and to help the family manage the problem.  Your supervisor thinks this referral would be a great opportunity for you and in order to feel more confident and prepared, would like you to do the following:

-Prepare a presentation for the allied health team (consisting of a physiotherapist, social worker and allied health assistant) at the community rehabilitation centre on dementia, how it affects behaviour and your OT role. 

Your supervisor tells you that this is a fairly new team with limited exposure to Occupational Therapy although they are familiar with the condition within their own discipline framework.
