Assignment Task

Purpose

This assignment will assess your ability to critically reflect on your experiences across the workshop on Cultural Safety and Responsiveness and how you think those experiences can be transformed into action for future clinical practice.

You are expected to write your responses using Kember et al’s (2008) level of critical reflection. This means examining your assumptions, biases, values, experiences and how these influence your thoughts, feelings and actions and how your reflections will transform your actions ie influence your future practice.

To do this you will:

Choose 2 key moments that really stood out for you during the module. Describe and discuss these in detail considering how:

  1. Your thoughts, beliefs, values, knowledge or assumptions were challenged or enhanced.

  2. These moments will influence your future clinical practice and support you to apply culturally safe practice, by way of an Action plan (we will have started talking about this in class).

Examples of such moments might be:

  • Hearing The Uluru Statement and then knowing the Australian government chose not to act on this
  • Discussions in small groups when you realised moments of your own cultural blindness or inadvertent racism
