Significance of the Study topic:
Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) is currently a major disorder whose prevalence is on the increase. It is estimated that approximately 366 million people aged 20-79 hears have T2DM which translates to 8.3%. It is predicted that by 2030 the figure will increase to 552 million (Ogurtsova et al., 2017). If not treated on time T2DM leads to chronic complications thus affecting the quality of life and the patient’s health. Over 50% of diabetic patients succumb to cardiovascular diseases and is a leading cause of kidney disease. The disorder is also a leading cause for blindness caused by the damage of the retinal. Additionally, individuals diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are at a high risk of limb amputation which is 25 times greater than healthy disorder (Rizkalla, 2014).
With the increasing burden of T2DM, multiple interventions have been proposed to help curb the increasing trend. Studies have also found out that T2DM is a disease that is affected by lifestyle factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, and dietary factors. American Diabetes Association emphasizes the need for managing T2DM by promoting healthy eating and underscoring the consumption of a variety of nutrients in the right proportion to attain better glycemic control and proper body weight thus prevent diabetes and associated complications. There is supporting evidence showing the association between high intake of calorie with increased risk of type 2 diabetes (Sami, Ansari, Butt, & Hamid, 2017). However, the certainty of the association between dietary patterns and the incidence of type 2 diabetes is not fully researched. The present study will examine the association between dietary patterns and an incidence of T2DM
Introduction:
There has been a progressive increase in the incidence of T2DM worldwide with over 300 million affected in 2013. The disease is a distortion inefficient breakdown of glucose and associated with a substantial increase in the risk for CDVs (Studart et al., 2018). Obesity and overweight are risk factors for T2DM and are as a result of imbalanced food consumption, expenditure and an unhealthy lifestyle. Diet is one the major risk factors that also determine others, and therefore food choice and dietary patterns are critical in preventing and managing T2DM. Thus, it is crucial to know the dietary patterns of T2DM and their relationship with clinical symptoms.
