Research Aims: 

This research paper aims to explore the downside of what appears to be the glamorous lifestyle of pop music artists. In this research paper, we aim to understand better on what makes an ‘ideal’ pop star, and how the media aids in the promotion of their music and the relationship between music artists with their audience (Utami, 2019). We also aim to understand better on how the respective cultures of the Western and Korean affect how pop artists are perceived and accepted by their audiences and fans, in terms of genre, image, media/marketing, concert presentations, behavior etc. The emphasis would be on how artists, audiences and the industry come to an understanding about what pop or Korean pop should be. This focus will then link back to the pressures of a pop music artist to uphold this ‘ideal’ and how K-pop as a commercial commodity will affect the mental health of these pop artists (Kim 2012). With the findings of this research, we can expose the struggles and dangers faced by these pop artists inflicted on them by having to uphold a certain image deemed as ‘ideal’. 

Research Methodology: 

In this research paper, I plan to do a case study approach, accompanied by interviews observations to learn more about the pop music industry/stardom, especially the Korean music industry. Social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram and Twitter will be used as my main focus to analyze the behavior of the artists themselves and their audience. Various types of videos of the pre-debut of Korean pop artists, such as vlogs and documentaries and will be used as a case study to observe the process and hardships the Korean artists go through to become a Korean pop artist. I will also be interviewing fans of both the Western music industry and the Korean music industry to gain more insight and learn more about parasocial relationships between celebrities and their fans
