Assignment Task:

Task:

Context
Australia is a multicultural and religiously diverse society. Religious pluralism presents challenges for Australian society about how to value diversity and work together to promote tolerance and understanding, so that all may thrive in a peaceful and harmonious society. An insightful feature article on religion in the local community is a way to educate readers and perhaps challenge some perceptions held by the wider community.

Task
Write a feature article for the local newspaper “The Morning Bulletin” reflecting on the fertile question: How can I and the local community be ‘good citizens’ and promote religious tolerance and understanding for all as a basic human right?

To complete this task:
You are required to address the following topics and must refer to at least three (3) pieces of stimulus in your article:
Summarise the place/role of religion in Australia and the local community (see Stimulus 1 and 2)
Discuss at least one challenge of religious pluralism for Australia and support with examples (Stimulus 3, 4 and 5)
Analyse one key spiritual value that many of the world religions share in common (Stimulus 6)
Reflect on at least one event undertaken by a local faith community to promote religious understanding and tolerance (Research or Mosque excursion notes)
Discuss ways that you and other young people can build personal tolerance, respect for other religions’ differences and contribute to interfaith harmony and dialogue in the local community
Devise a headline and angle for your article that will capture the interest of your audience.

Stimulus 1:

“Australia has had a rich diversity of spiritual and cultural practices for thousands of years, beginning with the diversity of beliefs and practices among Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.”

“Carnarvon Gorge, in the Central Highlands of Queensland, was home to the Bidjara and Karingbal language groups. Sprayed outlines of splayed hands, here known as murra, dance across metres of pale rock. Nets are also depicted, giving clues to their prominence in a complex society. The Bidjara and Karingbal people, known for their strong nets many metres long, used them in the hunt for large animals. Nets were also part of complex processes associated with death and burial. An engraved line curves along metres of rock, affirming the significance of Mundagurra, one of the great beings responsible for shaping the area when earth was still soft.” (Pascoe & Shukuroglou, 2020, p. 66) Canarvon Gorge Prehistory https://www.carnarvongorge.info/human-history-of-carnarvon-gorge
