Alternately smugglers will hide animals or eggs within carry-on luggage or on their person. Western Australia is home to two thirds of Australia’s reptile species, some of the most sought after birdlife and consists of vast areas of land with little or no population. Because of this diversity of wildlife and high reward, low detection rates, Western Australia has become a popular location for illegal animal collection. Recent prosecutions, product interceptions and advancement in technology have motivated the illegal wildlife industry to develop new techniques to facilitate their illicit trade and avoid detection. Illegal wildlife traders are now able to sell Australian wildlife on the dark web in eBay style auctions, and the invention of crypto-currencies and encrypted messaging apps allows the suppliers to deal directly with their customers, removing traditional middle-men. This technology also allows for transactions to occur completely anonymously, making it increasingly difficult for authorities to detect with current detection protocols. This new technology is also allowing smugglers to reach previously untapped markets thus growing the demand for Western Australian animals.
