During the first week of 2021, my family insisted that I learn to ride a bicycle. We live near the coast in an area that is not as hilly as some parts of Sydney. As a child I had ridden a bicycle but only on private land, never on public roads or pavements. My children wanted me to learn to cycle so that we could enjoy family bike riding outings and improve our health through exercise. Myself, three children and my husband all gathered in a local park with the appropriate equipment necessary for me to learn how to ride a bike. My husband demonstrated how to mount and dismount a bicycle safely. He instructed me on the most appropriate height for the seat and watched me practice how to apply the brakes on the bike. Once I was seated comfortably on the bicycle, I was able to glide along the path with both feet raised off the ground and not touching the pedals. Once I had mastered that, the next step was to use the pedals to move the bike forward. By the end of the afternoon I was able to ride my bicycle on the flat path and stop safely.
