Highlights
Task:
Learning Outcomes Addressed:
• Research a topic in performance history between 1600 and 1900, by selecting a topic, articulating a question, identifying relevant primary and secondary sources, evaluating source material, and sharing findings with peers;
• Articulate a simple argument in writing, following scholarly conventions, in a clear and well-organized manner;
• Explain key developments in performance history from 1600 to 1900;
• Recognize relationships between theatre and performance and historical, social, cultural, and aesthetic contexts;
• Describe several ways that different cultures preserve evidence of past performances of the past (e.g. oral history, photographs, audio recordings, textual records). Building on the research you have done for your annotated bibliography you will now answer your research question through a formal essay that is 6-7 pages long (3,500 words). We will be working on this for the second half of the term and it will include creating an outline of your essay. The outline is an ungraded assignment but failure to submit it will result in a 10% deduction from your final essay mark. Your essay will include 3 secondary sources and 3 primary sources and must be written in MLA format. It needs to follow a traditional essay structure, as outlined in Week 9. Steps to Completing your Research Paper
1. Building on your Annotated Bibliography you are now starting to write your paper answering your research question.
2. Write your outline (see template in Week 8) and consider how you are going to answer your research question. What three main areas are you going to focus on, and what piece of evidence will you use to illustrate your main points (these become the body sections of your paper).
3. As yourself what the secondary sources help you to understand about your topic and how you can use them to illustrate or give evidence in support of your points.
4. What primary sources will you analyze or use to illustrate your points?
5. Begin to write your paper. Do you need to do more research? Are you answering your question?
6. Read the Example of Academic Essay Structure PDF (Week 9) and try to apply that structure to your paper.
7. Make sure you are using topic sentences in each paragraph that tell the reader the main point you are making, and be sure that each paragraph has an illustration/evidence to support your point, and then an explanation of that material, ending the paragraph with a transition sentence to the next paragraph. 8. Edit, revise, take a break, look at it again, edit, revise, submit.
