Highlights
B. Research blog and blog discussion participation
Blogs (Web logs) are a modern form of commentary that have become popular with the spread of the internet. They are normally a rather short opinion essay (on all sorts of things really) posted on a web-based forum, usually interactive so that readers can respond with their own brief comments. Interestingly, blogs are also increasingly used for the review of and comment on current research. In this context, they are not simply a summary of a piece of research but rather a reader’s digest, if we want to put it that way; a brief essay that contextualizes the research question, highlights key insights from the research and shows how it might be relevant. This can be done more or less originally or artistically (with pictures or photos). See psychology research blogs, for example, at:
• PsyBlog at http://www.spring.org.uk/
• BPS Research Digest at https://digest.bps.org.uk/
• Wray Herbert’s “We’re only human” (APS)
We want to use this form to ‘digest’ research articles in our topic; to share insights with each other and invite comment and reflection on each other’s work but also the topic as a whole. For this assignment, you are asked to write a research blog onengagement and extremism online. you then need to:
• Search for an interesting current research article in a psychological journal that falls in the area you have chosen (a recent article preferably, not older than published in 2000).
• Write a blog about the research of no more than 750 words (minimum 500)
• Include at the bottom of the blog the precise reference to the research article (in APA format), which is not included in the word count.
• Also attach an electronic file (pdf) of the original journal article to your blog (that is, the scientific article that your blog was based upon). here are some points to keep in mind:
• The idea of this assignment is to stimulate engagement with the research, to build and gain from collective knowledge, and to promote exchange and discussion. That means you should not write for insiders (who are familiar with the article). Rather, you should write for those who are unfamiliar with the research; the blog needs to be comprehensible for them.
• You should not simply summarise the article (or, worse, simply paraphrase its abstract); rather, you need to present your own take on the research, framing the question so as to make it interesting, and selecting/highlighting central findings from the research. Yet, your blog should be truthful to the research, and not distort or misrepresent anything.
• Your blog should distil the key idea(s) from the research, contextualise or elaborate on its meaning and, in doing so, evaluate the significance of the research. You are not to provide a micro-analysis of methodological issues, but rather see and portray a larger picture.
• You should look for a suitable (social psychological!) article and not necessarily choose to blog on the first one you come across. It usually helps to write about something if you genuinely find it interesting. So, start by browsing abstracts on databases (PsycINFO, Scopus, Google Scholar, etc.) using suitable keywords.
The Research Blog will be marked based on the following criteria:
a. Level of understanding
b. Logic of arguments
c. Independent thinking
d. Originality/creativity
