1. Your research problem/question/hypothesis. What you expect to find out. Why your study is significant This is usually determined after you have read the literature and identified a meaningful research problem. You could have a research question and a set of objectives (steps that you will follow to answer the question by breaking it down into smaller tasks) or a set of hypothesis, it depends on your work.

A summary of your literature review (5-10 high quality publications) that positions your proposed study within existing research and identifies a gap The purpose of the literature review is to summarise what other people have done or written about. Feel free to refer to your concepts map that we worked on in Tutorial (2) for ideas on what you may cover in your literature review. The literature review should also establish the key theory/theories, conceptual framework, and/or design principles that is traditionally adopted in your domain and which you will be using to guide your research and data collection. Focus should be on covering the breadth or overview of the literature rather than going into the depth of your topic. Ultimately, at the end of the review, your summary should move from the general to the specific and flow in a way to arrive at a gap that gives a justification for why your research is needed. The references you use should be reliable publications that are academic and peer reviewed. Because the literature review provides a summary of other people’s work, please make sure that you use in text citations and add all used references to your references list.

3. The theories you intend to use and its role in your study A theory has many roles. It helps us explain the problem, predict the outcomes of our research, provide a lens or signs for things to explore and watch for during data collection. Theory can also be used and challenged or tested in our research, or it can be used to frame and generalize our findings. Depending on your research, you need to identify which theory, framework, or design principles you plan to use and what role it will play in your research. Remember, theory can also be in the form of a visual model with constructs or existing design principles such as system development life cycle principles that you are going to follow to guide the design of your solution.

4. The research strategies and methods selected (i.e., how you will carry out your study and why it is appropriate) Here you need to outline your overall research design without too much details at this stage since this will be covered in Assignment 3. Are you adopting a quantitative, qualitative, mixed method, and/or design science research design? What ‘method’ do you intend to use to collect your data (experiment, case study, survey, observation, prototyping, simulation, etc.). What are some of the ‘techniques’ of your selected method (types of questions, sampling techniques, data analysis and data presentations techniques you intend to use). You may refer to the work from Tutorial (4) where you worked on your proposed research design. I understand that these things may not be too clear at this stage but please try to outline the elements of your proposed design to the best of your knowledge as this criterion is worth 40 marks and needs to be addressed sufficiently. Also remember to support your choices by explaining why you think they are appropriate to the problem you are researching. For example, why you need to use an experiment or a survey or a case study to collect your data? This needs to be justified.

5. The contributions of your study to theory and practice. Explain the limitations of the study (this may suggest future research) Think about your findings. Would your findings build on to the existing knowledge in the domain of your study? Would your findings contribute to practice? Please do not forget the limitations. This could be in terms of who can use your research, it is still early stage and not tested, time, resources, your knowledge, etc.

6. The relevance and possible impact of your study Who can benefit from your work? Researchers? Practitioners? Groups of people? Organizations? Or just the body of knowledge in cases where your research is purely theoretical. It is not enough to only identify who will benefit from your research; you also need to explain how? In which ways?

7. Any additional topics that require highlighting such as ethics, quality, methodology and/or potential difficulties This is a good space to address issues of quality. Remember, in quantitative research, we talk about validity and reliability of findings as measures of quality. In qualitative research, we talk about authenticity and trust worthiness of our findings. If we design a solution, we need to think about its performance. Please review Lecture (4) for guidance. Also, do not forget to acknowledge any ethical issues that may arise from your research. If you have participants, there should certainly be some ethical considerations. If there are no participants and your work is purely theoretical, then this can be addressed as ‘your’ ethical obligation as a researcher towards other people’s work.

8. References that support your responses. References must be included in the references list. You may use the style of your choice but please maintain consistency, both in text and in the references list.
