“For this essay students will be required to research a place on the World Heritage List. The essay needs to describe the site and explain its significance according to the themes of the unit and argue why it is significant in terms of world history”
You are required to do two main things for your essay: (1) you must describe your chosen place and (2) explain why it is significant in terms of world history (all of the places listed on the World Heritage List, are considered to have outstanding universal value - OUV – discussed in Week 1 lecture).
1) Describe the site/place:
Describe and introduce the place you have chosen. This should include:
a) a description of the place,
b) a very general/brief overview of the history,
c) a map indicating the geographical location (remember to reference where you have sourced this map!).
2) Explain the significance:
You need to explain the significance of the place - why is it so important in terms of world history?
The World Heritage List website will substantially assist with this and will point you in the right direction in terms of the place’s significance. You may also refer to the themes presented in this unit (i.e. belief, early humans etc.), to elaborate on the place’s significance,
if any are relevant to your chosen place.
