Assignment Task:

Introduction

Please read ALL of this brief VERY CAREFULLY before starting the assignment.  The objective of the assignment is to help you to demonstrate data analytic and critical skills in conducting a small research exercise. It requires you to develop a research report based on a quantitative dataset which is provided for you (“organizational commitment and performance BUSI1191 summative dataset”).

This assignment is to be completed by you individually.

You will be provided with a dataset in SPSS which contains both nominal variables (i.e., gender and education) and continuous variables (i.e., affective commitment, continuous commitment, and job performance). You will review the respective literature of these variables and develop hypotheses on how affective commitment, continuous commitment, and gender affect performance. You will analyse the dataset using quantitative methods taught in the module. A full research report will be developed out of this dataset. Some useful references will be provided, however you are expected to conduct a review of additional literature, in particular related to the hypotheses you are to test.

Theoretical and Empirical Background

A number of studies have investigated how different types of organizational commitment of employees influence their job performance in different directions. Two dimensions have been of particular interest to researchers: affective commitment and continuance commitment. The possible impact of gender has also been discussed. For this assignment, you are asked to address the following theoretical issues with regard to factors contributing to employees’ performance:

  1. How does employees’ affective commitment affect their job performance?

  2. How does employees’ continuance commitment affect their job performance?

  3. How does employees’ gender affect their job performance?

Hypotheses should be developed for each of the three questions (Hypothesis 1 to Hypothesis 3). The full research report should have a structure as follows:

Introduction (200 words): Introduce the research context and the research questions

Hypothesis development (700 words): Literature review of the relevant variables and propose hypotheses based on your reasoning

Method, Analysis and Results (400 words): Provide descriptive statistics for the sample, explain how to analyse the data, test hypotheses, and report results

Discussion and Conclusion (200 words): Link your findings back to the literature and discuss implications

Note that the suggested number of words for each section is merely for your reference. You can make adjustment if needed. Although every section is important, you are suggested to give more weight to literature review and analysis and results. Some references are provided below for you to start with (you will have to search and read more by yourself). You may find them quite challenging to read especially the statistical parts. But what’s been taught in the module should have equipped you with enough knowledge and skill to get a good understanding of the key conceptual points that are essential for you to develop your own arguments and hypotheses. The referencing style can be Harvard or APA as long as it is consistently used throughout your report (the two styles are detailed in Pallant’s “Survival Manual”).

The analyses you would use include descriptive statistics (e.g., mean, SD, and frequency), reliability tests, correlation, and t-tests. Remember to check the data before you start your analysis (e.g., data clean, reverse scoring, etc). You do NOT need to test for normality because of the relatively large sample size.

When writing your report, you can refer to Liu et al. (2015), the paper that has been discussed in the second workshop, in terms of the structure and format and presentation of results.
