A questionnaire was designed to assess experiences of stress in adult participants and was hosted by Gorilla. The study was approved by BPP ethics committee and data were collected between August and October 2020. Participants were given the following information about the questionnaire:“The purpose of this study is to find out about people’s experiences of stress in their lives, together with their views about these experiences. This questionnaire asks you to think about how you have experienced stress in your life and then to answer some questions about this experience. We are interested in your views, whether you have experienced a lot of stress in your life or relatively little stress. Most of the questions ask you to give a rating along a scale: you are not asked to provide personal descriptions of your experience of stress. Towards the end of the questionnaire, you are asked some more general questions about who you are.”A convenience sample of participants were recruited from social media platforms.
The questionnaire contained a number of measures, with the measure relevant to Research report 1 described below.
The Brief-COPE
The brief-COPE comprises of 28-items with the following instructions: “The following questions concern how you typically cope with or deal with stress when you experience it. Please rate the extent to which you usually do each of the items. Do not think for too long about each one: your first reaction is all that is needed”. Each of the 28 items were rated on the following scale:
1 = I usually don’t do this at all
2 = I usually do this a little bit
3 = I usually do this a medium amount
4 = I usually do this a lot
