Granular materials such as rocks or soils are often classified by their particle- size distribution. Grain size distribution is used also as an indicator of rock properties (e.g. porosity, permeability, shear strength, and compressibility). Particle size depends on the length, dimension, and the method of measurement. The two main methods for determining particle sizes and particle size distribution are sieve analysis, for particles larger than approximately 0.075 mm, and hydrometer analysis for smaller particles.

 

2. Theory 

In sieve analysis, the tested granular material is shaked on a sieve with square openings of specified size, so that "size" of particle is based on the dimension of a square hole in a screen.
