Highlights
Task:
Bao is a Business Analyst (BA) who has been asked by her manager, Bhavneet to observe and report on how junior management is using a new accounting software package at a leading city accounting firm. As part of informed consent, company staff members were told that they will remain anonymous as users in terms of internal data collection on the new package's performance. During her observations, Bao notices that many of the junior management staff are making a particular data entry error when using the software. These errors are causing the accounting firm to lose significant current revenue that will longer-term impact profit levels significantly if not stopped. Bhavneet informs Bao that company policy dictates clearly that worker salaries will be docked for clear mistakes leading to the loss of company profit. Bhavneet instructs Bao to implement the policy immediately for all those concerned. Bao refuses to do what Bhavneet has asked her to do, claiming that it is unfair on the employees.
What professional ethical dilemmas are Bao and Bhavneet dealing with here? (e.g. Should we allow or sanction Bao or Bhavneet's behaviour? Is there a public interest question raised by this scenario? What actions do everyone involved need to take to ensure that this kind of situation does not occur again?)

So you’ve got an ethical dilemma on your hands. How do you figure out what to do? Generally speaking, there are two major approaches that philosophers use in handling ethical dilemmas. One approach focuses on the practical consequences of what we do; the other concentrates on the actions themselves. The first school of thought basically argues "no harm, no foul"; the second claims that some actions are simply wrong. Thinkers have debated the relative merits of these approaches for centuries, but for the purpose of getting help with handling ethical dilemmas, think of them as complementary strategies for analyzing and resolving problems. Here' s a brief, three-step strategy that shows you how to combine them.
