Abstract

A network architecture framework in which servers allow software to conduct all those tasks and functions which were performed by certain hardware in traditional network is known as Network Functions Virtualization (NFV). This has helped network managers to deploy new network functions with utmost ease and hence it becomes efficient to use software patches rather than hardware which led to dramatic expense reduction. The functions those are migrated from hardware to software components include firewalls, load balancers and many other such functions. There are many challenges that have been faced in which allocating resources in the network in NFV based network architecture as named as NFV resource allocation (NFVRA) problem is the most challenging one. This paper focuses on overcoming this challenge by offering possible solutions. Along with that many other future challenges are also addressed related to NFV-RA

 

INTRODUCTION

The operating network changes in terms of installation of hardware are always tedious tasks. The specialized hardware such as QoS monitors, gateways, proxy servers, etc. are termed as middleboxes. When the middlebox with dedicated function is installed in the system, network experiences many drawbacks that include extra costs, dedicated manager, energy inefficiency, this hardware solely work on dedicated function hence no new functionality can be added to the deployed middlebox. Additionally, these middleboxes have short life span [1]. Summing up all, NFV offers network designers to makeup many for the above mentioned drawbacks when network uses hardware for specific functions. Moreover, NFV provides network optimization and also helps in configuring hybrid functionalities that can make good use of virtual resources available on network servers. In traditional network middleboxes orchestration was a difficult and time consuming task where network traffic was steered as per order of functions required to be performed. However, in NFV, network services perform dedicated functions as of middleboxes in traditional network and the execution of services is managed manually. The network service chain in NFV are shown in Fig. 1 in detail

Architecture of NFV There are primarily three parts of NFV architecture: The network services, NFV Infrastructure and NFV Management and Orchestration (NFV-MANO) as shown in fig. 2. A service Fig. 2. (NFV-RA) Before understanding NFV-RA, it is important to know Virtual Network Embedding (VNE) problem. Resource allocation in network, embedding virtual network is a huge issue. VNE is related to allocation of resources in links as well as nodes. It helps in managing resources over shared network [4]. •The Virtual Network Functions (VNF) and services are important to consider while resource allocation. A network function is a block that is intended to perform a task within the network infrastructure. The services are the collection of inter-related VNFs and are deployed over many virtual network infrastructures (VNI).
