Henry was born at 38 weeks gestation via emergency lower segment caesarean section (LSCS) weighing 3.4kg. Ten minutes after delivery he is noted to be grunting, nasal flaring and recessing. Henry is transferred to HDU for assessment and management.
a) Explain why Henry might be displaying these symptoms, what is the likely diagnosis?
Following a blood gas it is identified that Henry is becoming more acidotic and it is decided that he requires further support.
b) Identify the appropriate methods of respiratory support available for Henry and with reference to physiology discuss how these maybe helpful.
c) Discuss with rationales the nursing role in the care of a neonate on continuous positive airways pressure.
