Restaurant Field Notes Assignment
Field notes are one of the primary ways through which anthropologists record information while doing research. We make detailed observations of our surroundings to help us better understand the human behaviour and cultural phenomena we are studying. In these assignments, I want you to visit any restaurant, or other public eating venues, of your choice (this could be a restaurant that serves the particular cuisine you are studying for your research paper, it could be McDonald’s, it could be the Langara cafeteria), and keep detailed field notes about your experiences and observations. You are welcome to team up and go to restaurants as a small group, but assignments must be submitted individually. In particular I want you to record information about:
1) Describe the location and setting
2) Describe the cuisine and kinds of food available
3) Discuss the aesthetic presentation of food that you observe
4) Observe and discuss the interactions between staff and customers
5) Observe the various cultural and social aspects of eating
6) Consider the ways in which aspects of culture, tradition, and authenticity are evident (or not) in the presentation of food, restaurant décor and imagery, etc.
7) Anything else you find relevant and interesting
Next, I want you to write up your observations in a document (4 pages double spaced, 12-point font, 1000 words). In your write-up, I want you to not only include your field note observations, but also an analysis/discussion of what you observed drawing on a minimum of THREE concepts/ideas from the course readings, or from your own term paper research. External sources must be cited in-text and included in a bibliography at the end of the assignment.
Personal Foodways Auto-Ethnography Assignment Instructions
Foodways are our sociocultural relationships to, and practices of, food and eating. Over the course of the term, to keep track of your eating habits, commensality, food preparation and acquisition in your day-to-day lives through fieldnotes. In this assignment I want you to transform those fieldnotes into a written discussion and analysis (1000 words) where you situate yourself as the anthropologist trying to understand and explain food and eating in the sociocultural life of a Langara College student during a global pandemic.
To help you do this, I want you to use THREE concepts from course readings/lectures to frame your discussion. The first part of your auto-ethnography should be a description of your own foodways (what types of food do you consume?, when?, how?, with anyone? etc.), the second part should be focused on anthropological analysis (how are the food and eating practices you participate in culturally shaped?, etc.). Please remember to cite your sources accurately.
