Berman (2019) and Reinartz et al (2019) are just some of the many authors addressing the challenging conditions for retailers. Well-known retailers such as Debenhams, HMV, House of Fraser, Maplin, Toys ‘R’ Us, Jack Wills, Karen Millen and Mothercare have gone into administration over the past two years.

Hammerson plc is an owner, manager and developer of retail destinations in Europe with a portfolio valued at in excess of £9 billion (Hammerson 2019). The company was established in 1942 and focuses on retail only, which includes prime shopping centres, retail parks and premium outlets.

Brief

You have been asked to provide an academic report to Hammerson’s Managing Director demonstrating how strategic management models/theories mightbe used to assist him in the development of strategic options to address the changing, and challenging, environment being experienced by retailers. You should include reference to two or three different theories or models and, in order to support your arguments, ensure your critique includes a range of different theoretical perspectives and opinions.
