The purpose of these guidelines is to present the objectives and conditions for fulfilling the research task that is placed at the end of first and second years of study. The guide is meant to be a practical tool for guidance and it is not a complete set of norms that must be fulfilled.
 

Objective
The objective of the research task is to train students in scientific research and writing, which in general will support the study process, and which specifically prepares the students for writing their final thesis for presentation at the end of the third study year.
The purpose of the research task is to demonstrate that the student has acquired the skills necessary to undertake both scientific and practical work in the field of law.
The first year students write legal research papers on a legal issue, whereas the second year students write interdisciplinary papers on a legal issue.
Students are free to choose the research topic. There should be two major considerations. Firstly, the subject matter should have some immediate interest to the student, as it will otherwise become difficult to maintain concentration during the research period.
Secondly, even more important is the consideration of sources, as even very interesting topics may be unsuitable for the research tasks and thesis if scientific and practical sources are not available to such an extent that the students may demonstrate their ability to analyse.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is not accepted at the school and all research papers will be submitted to plagiarism scanning. The act of plagiarism consists of using text authored by others, firstly without placing the text within quotation marks and secondly without adding a footnote reference to the source.
It is important to underline that merely changing the wording of a source will constitute hidden plagiarism, which the plagiarism scanning will detect. Even where text authored by others is duly placed in quotation marks and referenced, it should not take up a major part of the text of the research paper, as this will leave the teacher less basis on which to grade the paper. Quotes from sources should be included only where this is the best way to illustrate a point.One of the core points of the research task  is that the students are to study, analyse and apply the lessons that may be learnt from the various courses. This process will lead to a research paper that illustrates learning achievement of the students. In such case, footnote references to the sources used should be included only for the sources that constitute major contributions to the analysis.
 

Scientific method
The paper must demonstrate student’s ability to conduct legal research. A more advanced approach is to conduct an interdisciplinary legal research integrating techniques, methods, concepts and theories from law and other disciplines.
The classical scientific method consists in formulating a proposition and testing it, using various sources to verify if the proposition is true or not. Subsequently, the researcher will draw the consequences of the outcome of the research as a conclusion. As an alternative scientific method, the research will not start with a proposition, but rather with an attempt to clarify the state of the research topic. In this case, it is important that the researcher goes beyond a merely descriptive approach and adopts an analytical perspective on each element of the research topic.
