Extract A – Rieu translation

‘With the first rosy light of Dawn, I assembled my company and gave them their orders,’ “My good friends,” I said, “for the time being I want you to stay here, while I go in my own ship with my own crew to find out what kind of men are over there, and whether they are brutal and lawless savages or hospitable and god fearing people.” ‘Then I climbed into my ship and told my men to follow me and loose the hawsers. They came on board at once, went to the benches, sat down in their places and churned the grey water with their oars. It was no great distance to the mainland coast. As we approached its nearest point, we made out a cave there, close to the sea, with a high entrance overhung with laurels. Here large flocks of sheep and goats were penned at night, and round the mouth a yard had been built with a great wall of stones bedded deep between tall pines and high-branched oaks. It was the den of a giant, the lonely shepherd of sequestered flocks, who had no truck with others of his kind but lived aloof in his own lawless way. And what a formidable monster he was! No one would have taken him for a man who ate bread like ourselves; he reminded one rather of some wooded peak in the high hills, lifting itself in a solitary state’. (pp.143-4)

Extract B – Wilson translation

But when the rosy hands of Dawn appeared,

I called my men together and addressed them.

‘My loyal friends! Stay here, the rest of you,

while with my boat and crew I go to check

who those men are, find out if they are wild,

lawless aggressors, or the type to welcome

strangers, and fear the gods.’

With that, I climbed

on board and told my crew to come with me

and then untie the cables of the ship.

Quickly they did so, sat along the benches.

and struck the whitening water with their oars.

The journey was not long. Upon arrival,

right at the edge of land, beside the sea,

we saw a high cave overhung with laurel,

the home of several herds of sheep and goats.

Around that cave was built a lofty courtyard,

of deep-set stones, with tall pines rising up,

and leafy oaks. There lived a massive man

who shepherded his flocks all by himself.

He did not go to visit other people,

but kept apart, and did not know the ways

of custom. In his build he was a wonder,

a giant, not like men who live on bread,

but like a wooded peak in airy mountains,

rising alone above the rest.’ (pp.245-6)

Part 2 (700-900 words)

Choose ONE of the rewritings of The Odyssey (either Derek Walcott’s The Odyssey: A Play or Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad) and ANALYZE WHY this text rewrites elements of Homer’s The Odyssey and HOW it does so.

Tips:

• Begin with a thesis statement outlining your argument (i.e. what is the purpose of this rewriting?)

• Provide evidence to support your argument by giving close readings of key elements of the text/quotations that support your argument (i.e. how does the text rewrite The Odyssey?

• The focus of the essay is on either Walcott’s or Atwood’s rewriting of The Odyssey; however, you may need to refer to elements of Homer’s The Odyssey to explain key differences and similarities between the texts and to explore how/why these occur
