Highlights
Overview
Role-playing is the act of imitating the character or behaviour of someone else, to assume a role - either unconsciously to fill a social role, or consciously to act out an adopted role. Role plays provide students with the opportunity to apply the content and skills in a relevant real-world context where students can transcend and think beyond the confines of the classroom setting. Students get to engage in higher-order thinking and deep learning. A critical reflection is an act or an instance of critically examining oneself.
The student's ability to: assume the role of a counsellor and to use the necessary counselling skills in managing the counselling context from start to end will be assessed. Furthermore, the student's ability to demonstrate a great level of insight into and to honestly evaluate their use of counselling skills will be assessed.
Instructions:
This assessment consists of two parts: A counselling role-play and a written reflection.
Please read the instructions carefully to understand what is expected of you to successfully complete the assignment.
Part 1: Counselling Role-Play
You are required to invite someone to participate in a counselling role-play with you as their counsellor. This should be an unscripted conversation where you explore a personal difficulty. Ideally, you should choose someone you know the least in the class. Please inform the person that the role-play is for academic purposes and will be viewed by your educator for grading. Obtain verbal consent from the person before proceeding with the role-play. Record the first 30 minutes of the role-play using a camera, cell phone, or the Skype record function. Upload the recording using Voicethread on MySACAP, and submit the shareable link via the assessment submissions link on MySACAP for your educator to access.
Part 2: Written Reflection
Write a critical reflection in response to the following questions:
1. How did you establish rapport with the client and what techniques did you use to maintain a positive relationship throughout the session?
2. Did you find yourself making assumptions or judgments about the client? If so, how did you recognize and address these biases?
3. What aspects of the session did you feel confident about and what areas do you feel you need to improve upon?
4. What did you learn about yourself as a counsellor during the role-play session?
