Key Definitions:

Router: A network device that forwards data packets between computer networks.

User Mode: A limited mode on Cisco routers for basic monitoring, with fewer commands available.

Privileged Mode: Provides access to all router commands and features, used for configuration and diagnostics.

Interface: A network connection point on a router. Can be configured with an IP address for network communication.

IP Address: A unique address that identifies a device on a network.

Subnet Mask: Defines the network and host portion of an IP address.

Gateway: A device that connects different networks and routes network traffic. Configuring the gateway on each desktop involves setting the IP of the router's IP address as the default route for the computers to access external networks.

Ping: A command-line utility used to test the reachability of a device on an IP network.

Task

1: Connecting to a Router

Objective : This task is designed to introduce students to the basics of router configuration using Cisco routers in a simulated environment. By completing this lab, students will gain practical experience with router interfaces, network connections, and IP addressing.

Goal : Become familiar with the Cisco Router interface.

Lab Equipment: Router 2911 from the Routersmenu. Change the name of the router to be the last 4 digits of your ID student.

1. Start the Connection: Click inside the Router 1 window, and press the ENTER key to initiate the connection. You are now connected to Router 1 and will see the user mode prompt, indicated by Router>. This prompt has two parts: the hostname (Router is the default) and the current mode (> indicates user mode).

1. Enter Privileged Mode: Type enable and press ENTER to switch to privileged mode, indicated by Router#. Privileged mode allows access to more commands and configurations.

1. Exiting Modes: To return to user mode, type disable. To exit the router interface, type logout or exit from user mode.

Router disable

Router> exit

1. Type the command that will allow you to see all of the show commands.

Router show?

1. Type the command that will allow you to see the active, or running, configuration.

Router show running-config

1. Finally, type one of the commands that will log you out of the router.
