One of your clients has been offered the chance to invest in two renewable energy projects. The first is a run of river hydroelectric scheme, proposed by a farmer, and the second is a small tidal lagoon based at the site of a former tidal mill. Your client can only afford to invest in one of the schemes, so has asked you to investigate the feasibility of each scheme and advise them on which would make the best investment over the next 10 years.

The client has provided you with the following information about each project:
1) The Lantuel hydro scheme will make use of a watercourse crossing the farmer's land. The watercourse has a possible abstraction point where a mill used to stand. From the abstraction point a leat leads to a millpond which can be used with slight refurbishment (including the installation of a trashrack at the entrance of the penstock). The farmer’s preferred location for the turbine house is 50 m east of the millpond. The preferred location of the turbine house is in direct line of sight of the mill pond and is situated such that the gross available head at the site is 15 m. The farmer has provided a year's worth of flow data for the water course (see hydro resource spreadsheet on Blackboard and accompanying instructions).

You should also make use of the following assumptions and constraints:
a) The Environment Agency will grant an abstraction licence such that the reserve flow is equal to the Q95 flow.
b) The penstock can be built such that it is straight.
c) Pipe losses in the penstock should account for no more than 5% of the gross available head.
d) You must include a trash rack at the entrance to the penstock with a bar spacing of 25 mm.

2) The Hambleton tidal lagoon will make use of a disused tidal millpond close to Morecombe Bay. The millpond is connected to the turbine house via an 8 m long penstock, with the turbine to reside 1.5 m below the bottom of the millpond. The millpond has vertical sides, a surface area of 47,250 m2, a total possible depth of 6 m, and is flat bottomed with the bottom 3 m above the low tide level. There are 8 days worth of tidal data for the millpond (see tidal resource spreadsheet on Blackboard.)

You should also make use of the following assumptions and constraints:

1) The turbine specification for a single turbine system (rated power, type of turbine etc.)
2) The estimated annual energy yield of the system.
3) The capacity factor of the system.
4) The net present value of the system after 10 years and simple payback period of the system.

You should advise the client on the following issues related to the scheme:
The suitability of the resource for each a scheme, possible environmental impacts of each scheme and methods of mitigation, the limitations of your work, and the economic aspects of each scheme. You should also recommend which scheme the client should invest in providing your reasoning.
