Introduction:
It can be said that Sam is a typical young man who is struggling to find himself. So he believes that doing things to please others is kool or the right thing to do. Sam is clearly facing peer pressure from his colleagues, and therefore believes that his best response is to be defiant to his parents and others in authority as seen with him drinking everyday, and then upgrading to shoplifting. Due to the fact that he had no interest in getting a good education and dropping out of school at age 15, says alot about the guidance of his family and his peers over his life. It is however the plan of this group to explore and experiment with a theoretical approval that is suitable to assist Sam in making decisions that will assist to turn around his life for the better, if he so chooses to.
Questions:
What are the issues for Sam?
The origin of the issues caused by Sam may be deep-seated. Among other things, his deviant behaviour comes as a result of gaps in his social and emotional development and socialization. His conduct may be termed as juvenile delinquency. A juvenile delinquent is any young person whose conduct is characterized by antisocial behaviour that is beyond parental control and subject to legal action
(Juvenile delinquent, 1998). He may have started to feel the need to drink in order to compensate for things such as love, affirmation and acceptance that may be actually missing, or that he may deem as missing in his life. As a result, his exposure to alcohol has created a reliance and given rise to an addiction. It is reasonable to suggest that he may have been performing poorly in school with poor grades and a strong desire for acceptance from his peers. Poor performance at school may have been caused by a learning disability such as dyslexia. It is well documented that when learning disabilities are not addressed, students become disruptive and display maladaptive behaviour. This may have been the reason why he did not return to school. Furthermore, the fact that he is basically left to make decisions on his own suggests that parental guidance was possibly weak, or his disrespect for parental authority was severe. One major factor which operates in Sam’s life is the negative influence from his peers (Delinquency Prevention & Intervention, n.d.)
