Instructions
The assignment is divided into five tasks. It is highly recommended that candidates attempt all of these. The assignment is intended to assesses particular methods and approaches employed by candidates, with a rationale for Assessment for Learning (AfL). To this end a number of workshops with instruction given in the use of the ANSYS Workbench simulation suite and MATLAB have been and will continue to be conducted. The first three, accounts for 60% of this assignment, requiring candidates to develop a computational modelling skills developed in workshops. The bulk of the simulation work is to be conducted in Task 3, here a specific wind turbine design is to be analysed using ANSYS-Workbench with key verification work, accounting for a further 20%, being carried out in the penultimate task. For the final task, accounting
for the remaining 20% of the assignment, candidates should report their findings producing a formal report to demonstrate each of the learning outcomes outlined.

Learning outcomes
This assignment should produce sufficient evidence for partial fulfillment of the following module learning outcomes:
• Analyse and model engineering situations and solve problems using graphical and numerical methods
• Solve mathematical models of physical systems using simulation methods.

 

Background
Over the last decade wind energy is now responsible for 15%-25% of the United Kingdom’s power generation, this power being harnessed by wind turbines. Tasks
The assignment is divided into four technical tasks and one report writing task. Though it is expected and encouraged that these promote active discourse it is expected that the each of these tasks are completed individually. Where possible the sections of the final individual submission (excluding the prereport i.e.: title page, Table of Contents, List of Figures, List of Tables and Abstract) should not exceed ten sides of A4 (say 1500-2500 words). Any extra material not directly related to the demonstration/achievement of the module learning outcomes (e.g. Module descriptor) should be included in an appendix of a final report. Candidates are advised to refereed to relevant literature [1] and/or class/lecture material and focus on the module aims being explored [9]. It is the purpose of the final report to demonstrate to what extent learning has taken place throughout the whole assessment process and when/where the module learning outcomes have been achieved.

1. The NACA-2414 or a NACA-2415 aerofoil section are being considered for use in a small 4.2 m reinforced composite material blade. Access the use of theses sections, given that the blade tapers uniformly from a chord length of 600 mm at one end to 300 mm at the other2

(a) The blade is to be manufactured from a 0.125 mm unidirectional material with the lay-up sequence [0/ − 45/90/45]20s, use MATLAB (e.g. the trapz command) or otherwise to evaluate the:
i. Perimeter
ii. Area,
iii. and second moment of area about the abscissa. for each of these sections.

(b) Hence or otherwise use the parallel axis theorem, viz:

IGG = Ixx − Ah2 to evaluate the second moment of each of the sections about its centriod.

(c) Hence suggested the most suitable structurally suitable cross section.
