Choose a high- or middle-income country with which you are familiar and for which the case study described below is realistic. Imagine that because of concerns about: (i) rates of teenage pregnancies; (ii) rates of sexually transmitted infections; and (iii) the prevalence of dating and relationships violence in young people aged 15-19, a decision has been taken to gradually introduce a new programme in secondary schools which will include both a new curriculum on relationships and sex education and a strengthening of the links between secondary schools and local sexual health services. Imagine you are working as a public health researcher in an organisation which has been commissioned to conduct a preliminary evaluation of this programme. A budget of £50,000 is being provided to fund the evaluation and you will be working full-time on it for at least a year. Before you begin work, the Director of the organisation has asked you to write a research protocol for this evaluation.

You can make assumptions about any aspect of the case study, but you must make these assumptions explicit in your protocol. Remember that the aim of this assessment is not to assess your background knowledge of relationships and sex education. However, you may find it useful to engage with some relevant topic-specific literature to formulate your research question(s) and measures.
