This final project is a chance for you to demonstrate mastery of the programming concepts we have learned in the first seven teaching weeks of the unit. Moreover, it is a chance for you to identify and explore data related to a subject you are interested in. You will choose a dataset based on a published article, and write a MATLAB program that analyses your chosen data set. You will use the contents of your article to inform your analysis. The project is broken into four parts:
1. Identification of a study topic.
2. Program planning.
3. Project scripts and functions.
4. Written report.
Part 1: Identification of a study topic
Your project should be inspired by, or related to, a research question addressed in a peer-reviewed journal article. For example, many of the examples we have dealt with in this unit are based on data and analyses taken from PLOS One articles.
Your first task: find a published journal article that discusses a topic you are interested in. From a practical standpoint, you will find the next step easier if the article you choose has data associated with it. This is why most of our articles come from PLOS One; they are open access (i.e. anyone can access the articles), they are (fairly) easy to understand, and authors are strongly encouraged to publish their data. In addition to journals that have open access articles, you have access to many other journals through the UNE library’s website.
Part 2: Program planning
Identify a research question based on:
your data;
your data analysis skills; and
the analyses described in your chosen paper.
It is important to realise that the researchers who wrote the paper probably have many more years of data analysis experience than you, and had more time to dedicate to analysing the data. Therefore, I do not expect you to do an in-depth analysis of a complicated data set. Instead, I suggest identifying a research question that complements the analyses in the paper. If your paper focuses on a theoretical topic, you may need to simulate data before you analyse it. If this is the case, contact me first with your simulation ideas.
Once you have identified your topic, prepare a flowchart or pseudocode which shows a plan for the program and subprograms.
Part 3: Project scripts and functions
Using your plan from Part 2 and your research question from Part 1 as guides, write a script, or scripts, that analyse the data to answer your question. By the time this project is due, you will a good idea about the complexity of programs expected for this unit. Beyond incorporating Advanced Plotting Techniques (Chapter 11 of the textbook), I leave it to you to choose which specific techniques are appropriate for analysis.
Part 4: Report
You will prepare a report which will include:
Details, as well as a link to, your chosen journal article, and data source.
Your initial pseudocode or flow chart. I understand that the details of your final program will likely vary from this plan, that is OK.
Your MATLAB code that performs the analysis.
