Introduction
It is a rare event when a programmer writes completely perfect code on the first try. In fact, some programmers argue that more time is spent fixing code than writing new code! In order to save time and write better code, it is vital that programmers of all skill levels learn about debugging - the removal of bugs from code.

There are two main types of bugs in code: bugs that produce error messages, and bugs that let the program run, but produce the wrong output.

Despite these differences, the debugging process is mostly the same. However, bugs that produce the wrong output are much less obvious than bugs that produce error messages, so below are some extra tips for finding bugs.

Tips for identifying bugs:

  • If you are using Jupyter, restart the kernel as often as possible. The kernel can sometimes hide bugs if it hasn't recently been restarted.
  • If your program does some maths, check the calculations yourself on your own calculator.
  • Check how your program behaves when you give it different inputs - comprehensively check it, with a fresh kernel each time.
  • If you are submitting the program as assessment, do a full check of the calculations and behaviour (with a fresh kernel each time) after you have made your last change. If you decide to change something, then check your whole program again!
