Assignment Task:

INSTRUCTIONS:

Work through the following assignment exercises as you learn to use R & Rstudio. The exercises are similar to those covered in the first lab sessions and teaching resources that have been provided.

Prepare your answers using a word processing software such as Word. In your answers, include both the R commands you used to generate the answers and also the outputs/results you generated, including plots. However, do not just throw in poorly formatted text and plots from R or Rstudio into your answers. Your answers should be presented clearly and in a properly formatted document. When you generate plots in Rstduio, you can copy the plot into the clipboard and then paste it into Word, or you could first save the plot into a file and then insert it into your Word document later.

Once you have completed your answers, convert the Word file into a PDF file and submit the latter through the LMS by the due date shown below.

BOX PLOTS

Using the cropping practices data above, generate a box plot that would allow you to visually compare the levels and spread of yield values across the three practices. Label the y-axis properly and the x-axis with the names of the practices (P1, P2, and P3). Add a title to your plot and colour your box plots brown. What do the box plots indicate about yield from the three cropping practices? Report the R code, include the box plot and what the box plots indicate about yield.

USING LOGICAL OPERATORS

Provide the R commands that you would use to do the following exercises and the results obtained from running those commands.

a) Load into R the data in the file ’grades.csv’ and display its structure. Describe its structure, including the number and type of variables.

b) Calculate the percentage of observations that have with ’hours’ below 30 or above 120. To select rows for your calculation, use the subset() command. You can use simple logical operators to select rows satisfying certain criteria; look for examples on selecting rowns in the Getting Started with R and Rstudio document by Hailu (2020).

c) Calculate the median grade for observations with hours between 40 and 110 (inclu- sive).

d) Extract a smaller data frame including only the ’hours’ and ’grade’ columns and rows with hours values that are within the inter-quartile range (i.e. the middle 50 percent of values for hours). Call the smaller data frame g2. Display g2. Include your R code and the results in your answer.
