For this case study assessment, you will be given a detailed case study looking at a fictional company  ‘Digital-Ace International’ which has expanded by merging with other businesses in the UK and elsewhere. They need to consolidate their network requirements and need recommendations from you to integrate their various sites.  Your report should directly and indirectly address:

  • Implementation of networking integration across all the company’s sites
  • Explanation of routing protocol redistribution considerations
  • Provide guidance on how networking devices implement QoS to manage traffic 
  • Choice of secure implementation mechanism
  • Choice of appropriate carrier services for the network
  • Details of appropriate access control list implementation 
  • Implementation and management of local network infrastructure 
  • Discussion of other wide area network implementation details to ensure the delivery of a high-performance resilient and secure networking solution.

 

Digital-Ace International  Digital-Ace International

 

Since you last looked at Digital-Ace International, they have grown and merged with Cyber-Sense Systems based in Austin, Texas. Cyber-Sense also have a development office in Manchester, England. You have been asked to look at integrating the two companies utilising technologies capable of supporting ongoing operations. Details of the requirements are given below:

 

Offices

Three offices have different networking setups. These may need to change depending on your recommendations.

  • Austin (formerly Cyber-Sense HQ) has an internet connection which has proven to be  unreliable and insecure. 
  • Bradford has an internet connection which users have identified as being slow. 
  • Manchester has a business broadband connection.

 

Sites in the US are using OSPFv2 as their IGP and sites in the UK are using EIGRP. Manchester will be the HQ office for the new company. In addition, the company has small sales offices (typically up to four people) in the following locations: Seattle, San Francisco, Boston and Atlanta in the USA and Maidenhead, Paris and Milan in Europe. Mobile workers based in Singapore, Buenos Aires and Cape Town.

Requirements

The three main offices need robust internet connections between the sites to allow the exchange of data between the software development teams at all times. This connection needs to be reliable, secure and fast enough to cater for the ever-increasing amounts of traffic. In addition, the company has experienced problems using video conferencing software between the sites, travel restrictions have been imposed because of COVID19.  Staff have said they are receiving messages such as ‘ Your Connection is Unstable’ before total loss of connectivity, which is adversely affecting the business.  Communication between the sites must be secure to protect proprietary information such as source code.The various sales offices must be able to securely connect to the corporate network when they need to in order to access corporate information and process their sales. Generally, these connections do not need high bandwidth or permanent links. The majority of staff are working from home and have been experiencing connectivity problems with connections dropping without warning, all remote connections will need a secure solution.The Manchester office is situated on an industrial site which spans quite a few buildings. You will need to support this local infrastructure with scalability and security in mind.  

Deliverables

Write a report which sets out your advice for the WAN and local network infrastructure for the newly enlarged business.  You should include:

  • Recommendations about the topology of the network dealing with
  • How the three main sites connect to each other
  • How the smaller offices connect to the main network
  • How the mobile users connect to the network
  • Technical recommendations on how to deliver the required level of service and security between the sites
  • Routing traffic redistribution if appropriate or alternatives 
  • A network design plan
  • Details of access control list considerations in the solution
  • Local network management and implementation 
  • QoS considerations where appropriate
  • Discussion of other wide area network implementation details to ensure the delivery of a high-performance resilient and secure networking solution
  • Suggest an appropriate VPN technology and identify the benefits.
