The 2005 novel, The Broken Shore, and the 1999 film adaption, Snow Falling on Cedars, both explore the importance of confronting secrets. The author and the director of the novel and film look at how their characters have had to cope with their troubling past, Cashin has to deal with the fact that he lost his wife in a tragic accident while Ishmael has to deal with his PTSD from WW11. The film and novel use metaphors to convey symbolism of keeping secrets, in the film, the use of snow and fog is used to show how hidden these secrets are, (going to add more)

Secrets and trauma intertwine in the book and novel, Ishmael Chambers in Snow Falling on Cedars has to deal with the trauma of World War II and his tragic rejection by Hatsue Imada. Ishmael is left bitter throughout majority of the movie, resentful to the ones he loved most, he walks around with his heart broken and a lost arm. 
Just like Ishmael, joe Cashin and other characters in The Broken Shore have to deal with the trauma of the past. Joe Cashin shows that trauma is something that takes a long time to come to terms with, how the secret of his past is not something to be taken lightly. Cashin deals with the horrific encounter with the ‘criminal’, Rai Sarris, and his father’s death, he becomes obsessed with finding Sarris and later has to deal with his brother suicide. Despite the fact that his trauma has caused him serious trouble in his life, it has also helped him grow as a person and helped him. The novel also deals with the trauma of sexual abuse and paedophilia,
