Case study –
Project completed but too late Secure Inc. is a fast-growing supplier of modern residential and commercial security systems. Their growing sales force and varying sales commission plans prompted the need for a centralized and automated commission system to replace the spreadsheet-intensive procedures they had. Dave is the head of Accounting and approved the project plan developed by the assigned Project Manager, Sandy. Their preliminary research showed that a software package was the most costeffective solution. Sandy defined the scope of the project as follows:
Research and produce a list of the 3 packages that best fit the company’s need Produce the package, and Install the package The project took months to negotiate the contract and install it. Customizing the package to fit Secure’s need was contentious. The Sales Department wanted a web-based option, which the manager of the department, John, said would be easiest for the salespeople to use. Accounting wanted to limit the product to a Local Area Network for tighter security (info only stored on the local server). Since the system was being paid for with Accounting’s budget, Dave prevailed. Because of the lengthy time negotiating the contract, Dave was now in a great hurry to get the system up and running. But the Sales Department suffered from the huge amount of time spent on transferring, integrating, and reporting sales data. As a result, ‘flash’ features had to be added later to meet the Sales needs. During the project, the software developer identified a need to improve the current firewall and security settings, thus new security software was added to the project. By the time the package was installed at Secure Inc, which was a year from when the initial idea appeared, the market had changed from undersupply of security systems to oversupply. With fewer salespeople and declining sales, the company retrieved the previous simplified commission plan and many functions of the software package were rarely used.
