Peer’s draft 1
Seeing how the world is filled with many people in poverty is still beyond me. While writing the research essay it made me realize how many things it reminded me of. How these other information have a relation to my topic. Both the book “Evicted” and the book “Money” have a part in the research easy I composed. Poverty, crime, and eviction have all related to each other especially in the book “Evicted” where most of the tenant’s struggle to find a way to pay their bills and a little in the book “Money” that shows todays pressing issues.
In my research I noticed that most of the people getting kicked out their house are African Americans, and they are mostly women. You see the black men can be found stealing to meet their families need. Once they are caught and thrown in jail, they women are stuck by themselves to fend for themselves. Blacks are not given a break even in poverty. In chapter 6 of Evicted it states, “As late as 1960, rent in major cities was higher for blacks than for whites in similar accommodations.” Having someone already in poverty and the increasing their rent is just asking them to be evicted. Notice in the quote it only increases the blacks rent, like they are not struggling already. That’s why crime rates in black communities are so high, to make their rent bill and bring food to the table. When you increase someone’s rent and they are already struggling, it will be expected for them to be late and have trouble paying it. African Americans have suffered both in and out of poverty, they have seen more struggle then
any white person, Being a black women in poverty by yourself is even harder. In chapter 9 of evicted it says, “When women did approach their landlords with such an offer, it sometimes involved trading sex for rent.” Women, mostly black women, have to go through things like this just to make ends meet for there family. They have to worry about some landlords like that and what their going to do to stay under a ruff. That is where crimes come it.
