After studying a selection of poems, students are to create one poem or other text (in consultation with the teacher). This text must reference or be based in some way on one poem studied (style, form, theme, tone, technique etc.) It must use appropriate stylistic / language features. A Writer’s Statement will also be completed that explains the creative choices.

Helpful Hints:

§ Select a poem with a range of stylistic and language features

§ Try to allocate 200-300 words for your poem, and then 700-800 words for your Writer’s Statement

§ It will be easier to create your poem if you decide on a certain form – e.g. to write a certain number of stanzas or lines. A haiku or limerick will not be sufficient for this assignment due to the minimal number of lines in those poetic forms.

§ Your writer’s statement needs to explain / analyse your creative choices (i.e. the way you constructed your poem in terms of form, style, tone, technique etc.), how these choices impact on the reader, and whether you believe your poetry successfully meets its aim or purpose.
