Highlights
Using the chapters from Watson and Tharp (2013) and the lecture material, you will report in detail on the progress and outcomes of your self-modification process according to a goal set during the first couple of weeks of trimester. This exercise should be a reflection of your ability to set up and perform a scientific behaviour-change programme, and therefore precision, careful data-analysis, and clinical application are important.
The proposed schedule of activities for completion of the self-change project has been included to assist you in viewing this cumulative assessment in its entirety and to guide you in planning your completion of each 'step' of the project.
The written report must be carefully structured and, to assist you in achieving this goal, we have listed the subheadings (which reflect each step of the self-change process) below for your review. Please ensure that you use subheadings 1 - 7 and include Appendices and a Reference List. Refer to the lecture notes, class exercises and the textbook for any other requirements or ways to extend upon this guide.
Introduction And Literature Review
This section of the report is used to provide an overview of the neurobiological bases of your target behaviour, and the influence of environmental factors on this behaviour from a neurobiological perspective. You must refer to relevant scientific journal articles in APA format, and this comprises approximately words of your assignment. This introduction does not require a section heading.
1. Statement Of Current Situation
This section of the report is used to describe how the behaviour (you have chosen to work on) occurs in your daily life and the daily impacts it creates. This section is also used to outline your reasons for deciding to focus on the chosen aspect of your behaviour for self-change.
2. Target Behaviour
This section of the report is used to describe the behaviour you are targeting for change. Be specific. This is where you write your behavioural definition.
3. Preliminary Goal
This section of the report is used to present your initial ideas about the types of changes you would like to make in your behaviour and to present the 'cost and benefit analysis' associated with the goal you have set for changing your behaviour.
4. Baseline Phase
This section of the report is used to present data on how your behaviour naturally occurs and focuses heavily on a quantitative (i.e., numbers) and qualitative (i.e., description of trends) discussion of your results. This will involve you in presenting the analysis of your behaviour in relation to these factors:
(i) Form
(ii) Function (i.e., antecedents and consequences to behaviour resulting in the function of the behaviour e.g., escape, avoidance, preferred activity, tangible item, biological high and attention).
(iii) Valued Outcomes (i.e., specific positive outcomes that are gained by engaging in the behaviour).
(iv) You will need to provide a minimum of five recurring examples of A-B-C-f-(VO) chains identified, and present baseline data in a graph.
5. Formal Goal For Behaviour Change
This section of the report is used to describe the goal you will work towards in this self-change project. Your baseline data collection and analysis of behavioural trends can be used to ensure that you write an achievable and realistic goal. Large goals can be divided into a number of smaller or sub goals that represent the specific steps to be taken in changing behaviour.
6. INTERVENTION PHASE
This section of the report is used to describe the intervention approaches you used in changing your behaviour during the three weeks of interventions and intend to continue using in the future. During lectures, you have been asked to make changes on three levels: antecedents; behaviour; and consequences. Your text and the lecture material have covered a large range of intervention strategies. It is NOT your aim to use all of these in your self-change project. Instead, you will need to select individual strategies (only those provided in the lecture notes) carefully so that they suit your lifestyle and address the specific aspects of behaviour change you want to work on. This section of the report should include information on –
(i) The selection of specific intervention strategies providing the level of intervention (antecedents; behaviour; and consequence), the title of the intervention.
(ii) The procedures for using intervention strategies in your day-to-day life (i.e., the steps taken to implement the intervention).
(iii) The reasons for selecting specific strategies (linked to your baseline data).
7. Self-Evaluation Of Progress Towards My Goal
This section of the report is used to investigate the relative effectiveness of your intervention strategies in creating positive behaviour change and is heavily based on explaining data trends and the reasons for these. You will need to present intervention data in a graph. It would also be useful to outline how you might do things differently if you were to undertake this exercise again. Two points of comparison will assist you in evaluating the effect of your chosen intervention strategies on behaviour:
(i) Comparison between baseline and current behaviour.
(ii) Comparison between current behaviour and goal behaviour.
