This unit has two streams. Firstly, it advances students’ understanding of self and their development, and the impact of these on their professional development as counsellors and psychotherapists. Secondly, it provides students with the opportunity to understand and develop competence in beginning the therapy relationship and basic micro counselling skills. An emphasis is placed on the integration of these two streams to build the capacity for students to use the self in working at relational depth with clients. Significant emphasis is placed on self-awareness, selfreflection, power and control, personal and professional identity, beginning a counselling relationship and micro skills.
