Assignment details and requirements
The details of the three outputs for this assessment task (summarised in Table 1) provided below.
The overall aim of this assessment task is for individuals to demonstrate that they have achieved some of the key learning outcomes associated with this unit. As such, the tasks are designed so that students can demonstrate the achievement of key project and learning gates; thus reflecting project gateways that occur in
real engineering environments.

Safety by design activity
Conduct a safety-based FMEA for your team’s machine. This could be based on your final prototype design or the design of your machine at any particular stage of the concept (e.g. based on the concept submitted for the Project Gateway Task).
This task is based on Exercise 4 in Studio 9 (refer to Week 4 in the Learning Plan Module). Refer to the Studio 9 slides and video recording for further details.
Your aim is to demonstrate that you understand how to apply the design for safety approach discussed (in the form of the FMEA table), identify high priority safety risks and identify actions to reduce or eliminate those safety risks. Remember that these are the safety-based risks that are related to the operation/use of your machine. These are not the risks associated with general failure modes for the machine, or the risks associated with the manufacture of your machine. The risks associated with manufacture should be covered in your team-based project safety assessment (PSA) form that you completed for Assessment Task 3.
To minimize your workload, you only need to identify 3-5 of the most important risks. Where appropriate, you should include some images to allow the teaching team to understand the risks identified.
 

Engineering drawings for sub-system or sub-assembly
As an individual, please choose one small sub-system or sub-assembly in your team’s machine and provide a set of Engineering Drawings for this sub-system. The following describes the requirements for these drawings:
• As a minimum, the Engineering Drawings created will include an assembly drawing (including bill of materials) and a minimum of three part drawings. Each of these drawings should be on separate sheets within the single pdf file.
• Ensure the part drawings chosen are not trivial. The drawings must demonstrate your ability to produce 2D engineering drawings, according to engineering standards.
• If there are many individual parts in the chosen sub-system, you can choose just 3 to 5 of the most relevant parts that can be used to create part (detailed) drawings to demonstrate your engineering drawing skills.
• Off-the-shelf components (e.g. motors, bolts, nuts, etc.) that are part of the sub-assembly can and should be shown in the assembly drawing, especially if these help to show how the assembly fits together. However, you should not create part drawings of off-the-shelf components.
• For this task, you can use your team’s CAD (Inventor) assembly and part models. However, the drawings of this must be created individually.
• The part drawings should include tolerances on the important functional dimensions. These tolerances should be applied on mating components and features, using the hole and shaft fit method described in the CAD05 – Tolerancing topic in Module 3 on the unit site.
