Highlights
INTRODUCTION:
This unit will follow a detailed design and product development process from background research, concept generation, detailed design, through to prototyping and testing.
Current issues from experiential feedback include:(SEM721)
• Current heavy solution – 90-95kg – unable to be lifted by hand
• Non-standardised mounting/dismounting onto utility track for transportation and deployment of units on work zone. This causes deterioration in-vehicle control increasing risk of vehicle incident due to switching of the track’s centre of mass (see Figure 2 where >200Kg of the extra load is being fixed on the rear of a track).
• Use of a winch to mount/dismount the unit also introduces a risk of equipment failure which represents a potential crushing injury to the operator.
• Requires customised storage units and hence not cost-effective to client
• Restricted mobility for heavier all-terrain work zones as well as a high centre of gravity and highly vulnerable to tipping.
• A significant risk for the user to sustain a musculoskeletal injury whilst moving or repositioning the unit.
• Poor resolution of stability. With the risk of unnecessary pinch points for the user.
• The trialled engineering solutions for portability and storability of the unit(s) are not cost-effective.
Design Brief:(SEM721)
The challenge proposed, additional to the ergonomic requirements of the operational context, the solution must comply with the following design criteria:
1. Able to be used for the control of motorists and pedestrians
2. Must replicate the display of stop / slow bat
3. Modular (demountable) system for a single operator to be able to manually handle the unit without assistance of mechanical lifting. Focus on modularity and stack-ability rather than portability of a full system assembly.
4. No single component > 15kg
5. Compact (consider m2 storage requirement) when demounted
6. Wind resistant > 100 km/hr when fully assembled
7. A sole operator to load and transport the unit in utility track without the need additional storage units and to be able to deploy, move and/or reposition the unit without the use of wheels.
8. Versatile power requirements (min. 24h continuous operation, charge infield, adaptability to various power charge sources such as vehicle alternator and 240v outlet)
9. Ability to operate the device manually (operable without mains of power via control mechanism housed within a system), or operate the device via attached control from a distance up to 15 meters (control mechanism attached to the system via retractable coiled cable) and/or operating device via remote control from a distance of 100 meters
10. Barrier arm to have the ability to be operated safely in poor light and/or darkness. The barrier arm should also not be longer than 1.2 meters in length when stored/retracted for transportation
11. ARRB Transport Infrastructure Product Evaluation Scheme (TIPES) compliant
12. Vicroads (and other state road authorities) device compliant
13. Aesthetics (form) should comply with road safety regulation of equipment.
14. User-centric – focus on ergonomics, safety operation and versatile solution.
